Ingredients
This recipe uses super easy ingredients that can be purchased from a local grocery store if they are not already in your kitchen. Read the Recipe Card for the measurements.
- Frozen Blueberries – We prefer to use frozen blueberries as they are easily accessible year round and adds a great sweet taste to the smoothie. We especially love to use Trader Joe’s Organic Wild Blueberries. You can use fresh blueberries as well when they are in season. Blueberries are a powerful superfood with various well established health benefits.
- Banana – The riper the better. We typically use 2 bananas for each smoothie batch that we make.
- Vanilla Greek Yogurt – Great for promoting a healthy gut, Greek yogurt also adds protein and calcium. You can also substitute regular (non-greek) yogurt as well.
- Coconut Water – In addition to the electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium, using coconut water adds some sweetness to this smoothie. Regular water can be used as well.
- Chia Seeds – Packed with fiber, protein and omega-3’s, chia seeds are highly nutritious and blends really well in this smoothie – you won’t even notice they are in there.
- Spinach (optional) – We love to add spinach to this fruit smoothie as it blends in well and spinach is rich in many vitamins and nutrients and full of fiber ….. another superfood!
- Honey (optional) – Completely optional, only use if you need to add a touch of sweetness (for example, if you added a lot of spinach and used regular water or unsweetened yogurt).
How To Make This Great Tasting Blueberry Banana Smoothie
Step 1: Blend the Smoothie
- Place all your ingredients in a blender: Blueberries, bananas, vanilla flavored greek yogurt, coconut water, chia seeds, spinach (if using), and honey (if needed). Blend on high until smooth and creamy, approximately 30-45 seconds. If you like your smoothies really cold you might want to add some ice.
Step 2: Taste the Smoothie
- Taste and adjust flavor as needed. You can thin out the smoothie with more coconut water (or regular H2O), thicken with more greek yogurt, chia seeds or crushed ice. If necessary, sweeten with an additional banana or a bit of honey.
The kiddos love when we garnish with chia seeds, blueberries or slices of banana! Leftovers can be covered and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days or frozen into ice pops.
