With its delicate floral aroma and fluffy texture, this is our family’s favorite rice. Since jasmine rice is softer than most rices, the key is simply to use less water. Once we made this change, cooking jasmine rice became simple, easy and dependable every time.
To rinse or not to rinse? Rice is often judged on how separate the grains are, so if light, fluffy rice is what you’re after, rinsing is key. When you rinse the rice, you’re washing away the starchy dust that coats it. This results in grains that are more separate when cooked. If left unwashed, that starchy dust will cause the grains to clump together and sometimes giving the rice a gummy texture.

Ingredients
This recipe uses just a few simple ingredients. Read the Recipe Card for the measurements.
- Jasmine Rice – Our kids love Jasmine Rice for its slightly sweet, buttery, and nutty taste.
- Water – The key to cooking fluffy and dependable Jasmine rice is controlling the amount of water added. Please refer to the recipe card for the exact measurements needed.
- Salt – Adding a little salt to taste increases the flavor. Without the salt, the rice might taste a little bland.
How to make Simple and Fluffy Jasmine Rice:
Step 1: Rinse It
- Pour one cup of jasmine rice into a large mesh strainer. Set the strainer with rice over a large bowl.
- Pour enough water onto the rice so that it can sit submerged in the bowl, while still in the strainer.
- As the rice sits submerged in the water, give it a few gentle swirls to release the starch. Careful not to rub the grains too hard together as they may break.
- Lift strainer containing the rice out of the bowl and discard the starchy water. Using a strainer with a large bowl below it to catch the water makes washing the rice a bit easier when separating the water from the rice.
Step 2: Rinse and Repeat
- Repeat the rinsing process three times until the water appears clear, see image above. Once the rice has been rinsed, remove from water and drain thoroughly.
Step 3: Stir It
- In a medium saucepan, add rice, water and a pinch of salt. Give it a good swirl with a spoon to separate the grains. Put the spoon away, as this will be the only time you will be stirring the rice.
- Set the pot on medium heat on the smallest burner.
Step 4: Boil and Simmer
- Cover the pot and bring the rice to a boil.
- Once the rice has started to boil, keep covered and reduce heat to low and let simmer undisturbed for 10 minutes until all of the water has absorbed.
Step 5: Fluff It
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit covered and undisturbed for another 15 minutes.
- Next, remove the cover and fluff the rice gently with a fork.
Time to enjoy! This rice goes great with Teriyaki Salmon and BBQ Tofu. It also pairs well with meatballs and Thai sweet chili sauce.
